I didnt think that it was a possible cross. But i looked at my tank today and noticed that the salvini was guarding a vetical rock and sure enough there are some eggs on the rock. I guess both being south americans, this probly happens all the time heh

Sooo...this is my first community tank breeding. I assume that i should separate the eggs from the fish, or do i wait for them to hatch? I think that salvini's are mouth brooders? If so, should I move the rock and eggs and fish? Or maybe just let them be...arent mouth brooders generally good parents?

I dont really know anyting about breeding either of these sp. I know something needs to happen soon bc the tank is a little over stocked, currently, and there is a rather large Colombian pleco in there who could totally wreck everything.

If you would like to save the fry you can put the eggs in a ten gallon with an air stone where they wont be eaten .

yeah thats the general idea, i am just not sure if i should wait till they hatch before moving them or not...im thinking i should let em hatch then try to get them out, which should be a load of fun

should be a nice looking cross.
they are not south american, there central(big difference) and they are not mouth brooders but they are good parents. either move the eggs to a seperate empty tank or move the pleco to different tank and let the parents do there job. also this was posted in the wrong place

thanks, i knew about each of their habitats, i dont know why i posted otherwise. so should i have posted in the breeding section? that's where i started to post...

anyway, i read on a salvini page that "they take care of their fry for almost a MONTH" and thought that it said MOUTH! oops lol

i was gonna do a water change when i noticed the eggs, and i was wondering if changing the water now is a good or bad idea?

so yeah, im thinking i should move the rock. but should i move the mother with the rock or just buy itself? also, what should i feed the fry? i was thinking of something small, like protozoa, but i dont know where to either get them or how to grow em.

I usually move just the rock, or flower pot, or what ever into my q tank with an air stone. They should do fine without the parents. infusoria, powdered egg yolks, first bites any of it should work.

aye. i moved the rock to a quar tank w/airstone & heater and im gonna try the egg yolks cuz i dont know if i wanna risk the whole protozoa mess right now. i got too many projects as is hah
