Ok here is the low down I have green water. it is not a green like the alga boom I had in my 55 gallon tank but a light green. I still don’t have lights on the tank and I thought it was just that but I test fit my DIY canopy with built in lights last night and it is green! it looks really bad.

It is a 180 gallon tank with sand on the bottom and a fake log.
I have 2 bubble disks

I have 2 70 gallon HOB's
1 20 gallon wet dry pumping 800 GPH

I have 2 Rays one 8-9 inches and the other 5-6 inches (so very small)
1 13 inch Florida Gar

I do a 25% water change twice a week

My water parameters are as of right this moment

Nitrite 0 PPM
Ammonia .25 PPM
Nitrate 5.0 PPM
PH 6.0-6.4

I do not like adding a bunch of crap from the pet store and I put tap water straight into my tank for water changes with no problems (so far)

Why is my water green and what can I do?

First question do you use a water conditioner ?
My first suggestion is to try running some carbon and let the tank cycle fully and get rid of that ammonia
My second suggestion is if its green water go right for a UV and you will never have to look back.

Water conditioner is a great question, also how long do you (normally) keep your lights on for? Is your tank in front of or near a window with direct sunlight?

i do not use water conditioner

I do not have any lights or a window on the tank. i keep the blinds shut on the window by the tank.

I have some carbon in the sack for a fuvol canister can i add it to my sump?

i dont think the question was asked but how long have you had the tank and filtration set up with the current stock list? if there is ammonia present then you are cycling the tank. did you clean the filters? rearrange the tank? add new fish? first point to look at is why your ammonia is present (signifies incomplete cycle) and your nitrates are sooo low (signifies incomplete cycle to me), 5ppm is basically unattainable, in my opinion, but im sure there are some discus guys with RO water that will differ with my opinion.

BTW ammonia can turn your water green i believe. someone correct me if im wrong.

The tank has been set up for 5 weeks with the 2 rays and i aded the gar 3 weeks ago.

Both HOB's were running on other tanks for 6 months or so and the Wet dry for a week on a well established tank before this tank.

I do wash the HOS's filters in tank water ( in a bucket) once every 2 weeks.

It turns API liquid tests green. But ive never seen the water turn green as a result. I do believe his issues stem from the ammonia somehow. Maybe time to cut back a little feeding and run even a cheap uv if the tank cycles and still has green water. Or even a phosphate remover in his fluval might do the trick maybe its just high phosphate water.

I do not have the fluvol running it is the 304 and i do not have the hose for it. I need to get one (does anyone have an extra?) i Carangid
mine for the sump.

I have 8+time turn over rate right now is that not enough? I do not want to add the fluvol if i dont have to.
