I have a 55 gallon with 14 african cichlids all under 2 inches. The tank is cycled and healthy. Ph is around 7.8 and there is no obvious ammonia in the water. Yet for some reason there was a little algea bloom about 2 weeks ago and i did a few 50% water changes which helped a little. The water is no longer hard to see through, but it isnt "clear". I was wondering if i should cover the tank with a black sheet and cut off all light to the aquarium to kill the algea. or should i use a chemical supliment? and should i keep doing big water changes? what do you guys think?

If possible, a UV filter will help the problem, but if thats not an option, i've read on MFK that it is possible to help kill the algae by covering the tank completely so no light gets in... but can't remember how long you were supposed to do it for...

hey
you can throw a blanket to keep direct light away from the tank but if you have plants don't do this because plants need light. there are alot of chemicals which are safe to put in tanks (read the warning label thoroughly though) but that is in the last ditch effot in combating the green monster. I have used algaefix in the past and has worked well for me but getting to the source of the problem is always the key thing to fighting green water. You have been doing water changes and you did see improvements so keep working on it and i am sure it will clear up. Good luck and keep us posted

ok ill keep up wit the water changes and ill keep it covers for now because i have no live plants.. thanks and ill let you know if theres any changes

where do you put your tank?its always best to keep it away from sunlight, or else move it away from direct light.

well i went to walmart and got "tetra" algea control
i put in 5ml and on 30-40 minutes it was clear as day!
thanks for your help guys
