I'm new to the forum but have been a lurker for quite a while now. I figured this would be the best place to introduce myself. My first job years ago was at a lfs in New Jersey. I've kept many fish over the years, from goldfish and community tropicals, to Africans and SA/CA Cichlids, to predator marine species, and corals.

I've been out of freshwater fish for a long time now and out of reef keeping for several years. I am gearing up to install a 150 XH in my living room wall over the next few months. I've already got the tank, glass canopy, Modular Marine 1600 gph ghost overflow, and a new 40 breeder to use as a sump. I also have another 40 breeder that is already set up to use for a quarantine tank. I'll still need to figure out a pump, heaters, and lighting, along with the stand construction and wall penetration.

My initial idea was to keep Africans again, but the more I looked at an assortment of other peoples African tanks, the more it made me want to do something different. Then I began to consider Discus. While I find them amazingly beautiful, I was afraid they may not be well suited for the high traffic area that the tank will reside.

As of lately I have been obsessed with SA eartheaters. In the early 90's I had a Satanoperca Jurupari in a mixed SA cummunity along with an Oscar, a few Angelfish, and a Red Pacu, as well as a Bala Shark. (We called them Tri Color Sharks then) in a 75 gallon. (As you may have guessed, I had no idea what I was doing at that time) With all the fish that have come and gone over the years, I still think of that Jurupari more then any other fish I've kept.

I've just read over what I've written so far and realize that it is longer then I intended. If I haven't lost you yet, I'd just like to say hello, and thank you all for all that I've already learned from this forum so far. I look forward to continuing to learn and become a part of the community. I will keep you posted as things develop with the new tank.

Freshwater is way cheaper than saltwater especially reefs so you can do a lot more. There are a lot of fish that could go in that aquarium.

Greetings! SA communities are great. Im in the process of upgrading mine from a 95 hex to a tank roughly the size of your 150. Still building my stand and figuring out the sump and plumbing as well right now. Never kept jurupari myself but i think you have room for a small shoal in that tank.

Are you setting it up peninsula style or the long side in the wall?

Sounds like you and I are in about the same place.

It will be set up with the long side glass flush with a long wall in my living room like a picture frame . It backs up to the spare bedroom closet behind closed doors. I wish I had room for a longer tank, but without major construction, it wasn't possible, so the 150 xh was the biggest, off the shelf tank I could fit.

Nice so its gonna go all the way in? Or just a portion sticking out? I think it would be nice with about half of it out for viewing purposes.

Edit: oh nvm you already said it was flush.

You should definitely document it with a build thread in the setup section. I had toyed with the idea of building mine into the wall a bit but wouldnt really fit my space and thats a lot of extra work for me. You gonna make a maintenance door in the back of the closet?

Mines gonna be a peninsula style bullnose 48x24x36. My first nice custom tank so im pretty excited.

I plan to take pictures along the way and will post them as I go.

The closet has double doors with a 5' opening. The interior is just over 6' long and 2' deep, so a longer tank would have fit but would have left no room to work on it. The closet opening is only 80" high, so the biggest challenge with the tank being so tall is going to be access from the top . I plan to have the stand be 36" tall, so the top of the tank will be at 66". That leaves me very little room on the back side. I may have to make access doors above the tank on the viewing side in the living room. I won't know for sure until the tank is in place to see what I'm really dealing with. I've been nervous about working in such a deep tank. With yours being 36", I'm sure we will face some of the same challenges.

Yeah but i love the tall tanks. The hex tank i have is also 36" tall and you do have the get creative. Ive got a whole set of makeshift tools--nets, algae scrapers, siphon tube, an old spatula--attached to wooden dowels so that i can actually maintain it. Biggest problem i have is algae.

Even if you make your stand relatively tall--say 36 inches--you should still have around 14" of clearance to work with back there which is plenty imo. Sure it wont be ideal, but things rarely are in these circumstances.
