Hello there,

I've been lurking for a while and recently joined - thought it was about time I introduced myself.

As a fishkeeper of many years, a move of country and a change to Mbunas has sparked my interest in photography - and looking at the standard of photography on here and other forums, I see I have a long way to go.

I've attached a couple of the pictures I'd be brave enough to share, if nothing else as a historical reminder to myself of how bad I once was :-D

I don't have Photoshop as of yet and am pretty pathetic with even the most basic of manipulation software. Where can I get Photoshop from? Is it available on trial?

I know a few of the areas where I'm going wrong - mainly due to the wrong camera - I'm using a HP Photosmart 735 which was bought for general use and certainly isn't suitable for this kind of photography. I know that I need a better (remote) flash and that I need to be able to adjust shutter speeds.

I've recently bought a tripod (it's a start) and my partner informs me that father xmas wants to know what kind of camera I'd like for xmas (or maybe earlier  ). The Nikon D50/70 seems to be the camera of choice on here - is it ok for a newbie to use & grow with?

Many thanks for any and all advice!

cheers,

Andy C

Hi Andy - nice to see another UK member.

You may encounter a steep learning curve with a dslr if you are upgrading straight from an automatic compact - saying that, I am sure you'll post any questions on here. Everyone is really helpful. ;)

Welcome Andy. Lancashire isn't too sunny today either.

clippo is right about the difference between the cameras, but you can set a D70 up to act in the same way as a point & shoot camera, and then learn how to use the individual features step by step.

Hello Alan & Clippo,

Many thanks for the replies.

I realise it may be a bit of a step up, but I didn't want the expense/fuss of migrating from where I am now to a D50/70 via another camera. Am extremely open to suggestions on alternatives. I had a SLR in the past when digital was still an expression only to be found in sci-fi books, so can vaguely remember terms like f stop etc. (Any idiots guide around btw?)

Thanks again.

There are idiot's guides around (and idiot guides - like us ).
If you've used a film SLR previously then you won't be satisfied with anything less than a DSLR. I got my D70 a few months ago and I'm very fond of it (although I haven't given up film for specialised fish photography yet). Look around APF and see what the experts use.

Alan, that is such a dejavu :) (inside joke).

Welcome to APF, dont worry about the learning curve. we make it easy :) You wont believe your results.

Welcome to the forum, Andy. Looks like plenty of good opportunities for you with those mbunas and Synodontis.

Thanks Eric & other for the welcme.

I hope the synodontis (njassae) do give me some opportunites - that pic was taken day one (two months ago) and I've seen them a handful of times since - they really do like nights and those rocks!

Welcome Andy. Looking foward to some more pics of those mbuna. We are having a meet up in a couple of weeks at Birmingham Sealife Centre and it would be good if you could make it :)

Cheers
