Hi All,

Well, I've been browsing the forums for over a month now, and figured it's probably time I should get around to introducing myself and participating. :) The wealth of information you guys have here is amazing.

A little about me: My name is Chris, and I live in Reno, NV (originally from Boise, ID). I've been into fish/fishing my whole life. My parents had me out camping the weekend after I was born, and as soon as I could hold a rod I was catching them. :D We always had an aquarium in the house, but never more than 10 gallons. My mom was kindof boring with them, Guppies, Neons, etc. One great memory was catching a couple 2" crayfish for her to put in the tank, and a week later she noticed several fish missing. Couple weeks after that there were no fish left. :)

Anyway, I'm 32 now, and have not had my own aquarium since moving out of my parents' place 14 years ago. Got a couple boys of my own now too, and they're getting old enough that I don't have to worry about them dumping bubble solution or soda into the tank or anything, so I decided it's a good time to get back into it. :)

I've always wanted to do Saltwater, but there is a lot more involved with that so I'm starting out with Fresh until I get my feet wet (bad pun, yeah). Was searching around the net for aquarium guides and stuff and stumbled across this site. I was hooked. I've probably read all of the threads in the DIY forum twice. The concept of a plywood tank is really cool, and I will be there before too long I think.

Had to step the wife into it though, so I went down to Petco this week and picked up a 55 Gallon and a 20 Long. Will be using the 20 Long as a Sump/Refugium below the 55. Started building the stand for them today, and should have it finished tomorrow. Already have the 20 long sub-divided with some acrylic inserts, and put water in with the pump just cycling the water for now. No, as I told my wife, I couldn't wait 1 more day. :D

I originally wanted to do a native tank (Perch. Bluegill, etc.), but apparently it's illegal to actually go to a lake or river and take a live fish home with you in Nevada. And just about everywhere else for that matter. I don't see the problem, but whatever. That leaves me wondering what to stock. I know the Refugium (~12 gallons of the 20 Long) will have loads of Anacharis and I'm thinking a nice colony of Red Crystal Shrimp will go well in there. I'm using pool filter sand as the substrate (natural color, not white). I'll probably be building some DIY PVC caves and stuff for the 55.

That's pretty much where I am right now. Staring at my 20 long sitting on the kitchen table just pumping away, and wondering what fish I am going to get for the 55. :)

A few that I've considered are:

Crayfish: Always have loved those guys. They are a blast to watch. I figure I can fit 4 - 6 of them in the 55. Only problem is they limit the fish selection quite a bit from what I've read. The fish have to be big enough that the crays won't bother them, but the reverse is also true, the fish can't be big enough to eat the crays. I like some of the australian crays, Cherax Destructor and the Zebra one (Can't remember the name). They might be a little big for the 55 though. I want ones that will max out around 5 or 6 inches for this tank.

Convict Cichlids: Read that they're easy to keep, breed like rabbits, and aren't 'too' agressive as far as Cichlids go. Not sure how nice they would play with Crays though. Fairly cheap too.

I figure I can get around 15 fish that get 5-6" long though. Might be a little overstocked, but my filter and refugium should be up to the task. If anyone has any suggestions, I'm open. :)

Of course the 55 is just a stepping stone until I can convince the wive that I need a 300+ plywood tank. ;) I figure I'll have that in the next 6 - 12 months. :D

Anyway, it's great to be here and I'm looking forward to being a part of the community. :)

I like native fish and it is a bummer if your local laws do not allow it. I also keep crayfish and anything you put in with them should be considered food for the crays. No matter how well fed mine are they will hunt a fish just for chuckles and not even bother with a bite after their conquest.

Crays will also find any exit you have even above the waterline to get out and you will find a dead dry corpse half way across your house.

Hey all,

Just figured I'd update. Things are going pretty well so far. Built a stand and got the 55 up and running, and it's technically overstocked at the moment. :D (or will be once the fish grow up)

Stock List:

2x Convict Cichlid - 1.5"
2x Firemouth Cichlid - 1.5"
3x Jack Dempsey - 1.5"
3x Blue Gourami (Wife's choice) - 2"
3x Pictus Cat (Wife's Choice) - 2.5"
5x Peppered Cory - Just over 1"
10x Oto Cat - Just over 1"

So far everyone gets along pretty well. Didn't have the Otos until a few days ago. Picked them up after an algae breakout last week. Great little cleaning machines. Eventually I'll split them up among other tanks. Wife seems to be on board with everything, and even mentioned some fish for my 'next 55', so I should be a shoe-in for the 300+ before too long. Heheh.

I scratched the sump/refugium idea after a couple weeks into it. I find that I hate DIY Overflows on non-drilled tanks. With 1" pipe, it couldn't keep up with my pump (~500 GPH). With 1.5" pipe, it sucked too much air and kept breaking the siphon. 2 1" overflows worked, but it looked horrid with all the bare PVC in the tank. Overflow kept sucking up fish too. All the filters I tried for the overflow pipe just restricted the flow too much. Just a giant pain in the butt. I went out and got 2 Penguin 350's for the 55, and I'll make the 20 long into a snail/shrimp tank.

Water parameters are all running good. 0 Ammonia 0 Nitrites. Not sure on Nitrates, I don't have a test, but I change aout around 10% or more of the water daily for now. Anacharis is growing, so it's probably eating the nitrates too. PH is 7.2 and ~80 degrees.

I did some DIY PVC Caves for the 55, 2 short caves (3" Dia x 5" long) and a big 4" Diameter "Y" (It's like 15" x 10"). All siliconed and covered with sand to blend in.

Then I did some DIY fluorescent light fixtures, 4 4' T8 Daylight bulbs running on the 55.

I also got some cypress branches from some cypress trees I whacked down in my yard last year for some decoration. fashioned them into mini twisted-gnarly looking trees about 15" tall and a foot in diameter. 2 of those in the tank. Not 100% sure I like them though. I might just dig up the cypress tree stumps in the next week or two and see what the roots look like instead. Have heard the roots are pretty popular with aquarists.

Anyway, that's it for now. I'll see if I can get some pics up tonight, assuming the water stays clear. I was wrong about my youngest son being old enough to not dump stuff in the tank before. He dumped a whole container of food into the tank last week. Been a fight to get the water clear again since then. Lots of big water changes the last few days. Think that's what sparked the algae bloom too. He was just trying to help feed the fish though. ;)

Welcome to MFK, I agree with you about being over stocked in that 55. Tell your wife we said you need a bigger tank!:D Stop by and see us in the Central/South American forum.
