Any tips guys how can I make my BD more black in color. Approximate size is 10 inches and diet is prawn and mussels. Just added black background 2 weeks ago thinking it will help and just added p14.
Any suggestions and experience will be appreciated.

Many thanks!FB_IMG_1481223675788.jpg

i may be wrong but it looks to be henlei mix, if so it may keep the lighter base... its a good looking ray! Like the p14 as well!
Oh that's the reason why...I bought this to a reliable breeder and was sold to me as pure BD

Some BDs stay greyish for quite a long time. I heard many times that those BDs are of great quality. Could very well also be some Henlei mixed in, but the BD x Hen hybrids I have seen so far look quite different though, but you never know...

I think many of the "BD" imported from asia are those cherry picked for traits as opposed to genetics, but I don't know that to be true.

I have pure BD sisters, one has a grey base at 9" the other completely black at 8"

Many BD especially big spot have Hen ancestry. Belly spotting is traditionally more of a p12 trait than a p13 trait but we use it as a marker of quality with BD p13. It's an awesome ray, don't worry about the base darkening :)

Thank you very much for all your thoughts about my BD..still learning but with all your comments in felt like I'm a guru now haha....

Cheers!

I totally agree with Dieselhybrid Dieselhybrid here. And as far as I know, I've heard from some good breeders that "BDs" that stay "grey-ish" longer, are usually of really good quality.
