Need advice I have a forty breeder w two aquaclear 110 filters sponges only , after adding clarity by seachem the tank now has a grey ash like volcanic dust over rocks and black gravel sponges seem suffused with it, fishes not affected but very unsightly will I need purigen, or a fine mechanical filter as a fifty percent water exchange did not help. Could this be sloughed Bacterial colonies, in thirty yrs never have seen this and only one tank affected. Ideas???

A clarifier takes particles suspended in the water column and solidifies them. What you are seeing is the solid particulates that are left. I have no idea how to remove them. Does your filter pick them up?

No thats just it when I clean the sponges it just seems to start over again I guess I need to be patient but a little frustrating as I went w hangon filters for ease of maintance but a canister would trap the particles in the canister to be removed away from tank. The hangon I just remove the sponges and it starts all over.
