I have one of the Marineland biowheels with my fish tank with sand substrate. lately it has been making this god awful grinding noise.

Is there a way to fix this? or a better filtration system to use with sand?

That noise is caused from the sand getting into the motor and grinding down the magnet that spins and pulls the water in. Just like sand paper....you might just have to get a replacement of the magnet and propeller....that are one piece and that should fix the problem! Most spare parts have to be bought from the manufacture...but some local fish stores carry parts depending on brand!

most filtration provides oxygen for your fish and keeps the water moving....If you have a sponger filter in there than yes...but if not...just let it run.....until you can fix it or buy a new one..... and change the media from the old filter to the new. I have to canister filters on my 100 gallon and I have not had a problem yet. What type of fish are in the tank?

I have a chocolate pleco and an EBJD.

*sigh*

I basically messed with the impeller alot and got the sound to calm down a bit. I will definitely be looking into replacing it either with a new filter or just the impeller. I decided to reduce the length of the intake such that it isnt as close down to the sand anymore. that will probably help >_< I hope.

Yeah...I know many people have this problem..... a lot of fish like to pick up sand... It should be an easy fix. I prefer sand to rocks because it is so much easier to clean...but the filters dont like it! lol Yeah with the reduced lenght that will help out significantly!!

I have had this problem a few times recently on an old marineland 100 . . . I've been able to fix it twice with cleaning etc., but it looks like this is strike-3

I've going to use this as an excuse to replace it with an AC20 . . .
