Hey guys well I am looking to grow-out a few polys (2-4 that are about 3-5") and was wondering what size tank would be good to grow them out in? I only have a 28x26" space it can go into though. I am looking at a 45 gallon tall with the dimensions 18 1/4 wide 20 1/4 long 30 3/8 deep but I was thinking that that was a little too deep for the baby polys and that there might be problems with them getting up to the surface especially if I try and put some driftwood in there. I have a 20g high but thought that it was not wide enough, I also had a 10g that I thought was too small as well. What other footprints might work? I want to have the best possible grow out tank. Thanks
Go as big as you can , the bigger the better for grow out , more water volume will result in faster growth. Don't worry too much about depth it's well worth it to ad the extra water volume. Include floating plants, not surface floaters like duckweed, go with something like Anacharis that will ball up making a spot for young bichirs to rest hidden right at the surface.
Driftwood will also help, pile it, leaving lots of horizontal perches for bichirs to sit on at night to rest close to the surface if they wish.
I found my bottom jaw's do this a lot at night just perched on the wood, in the day they rest on the bottom and use the driftwood as cover following it up too the surface when they breach for air.
My young upper jaws like to hang out about 50/50 in the floating cover or at the bottom day or night . As they mature they seem to loose interest in the floating cover spending more time on the bottom but also much more time free swimming in the tank .
So do you think any of the above tanks would be a good grow-out? if not I have found someone selling a cube tank that has the dimensions of 24Lx24Wx18H do think that would be a better option that the tanks sited above?
Since width and length are the best dimens to have w/ polys i would go with the cube if i were you Dr. B, as long as you feed well, have really good, overfiltration and a relativley stress free enviroment you should see good growth. Ive always grown my smaller polys out in a 30 ga w/o problems

My bad the dimensions I said were wrong they are actually 24Lx24Wx12H. Do you guys think those dimensions are good or should I try and find a tank with a little more height?
I'm gonna try and grow them a couple inches more than what they are once I get them (they should be coming in about 3-5"), but at the same time that tank will be there QT tank. So if one of them comes in really small I can QT it with the other polys but once I put the other polys in the tank I can grow it out.
