Hey guys quick question is a grow out tank necessary? Or does it depend on the size of the fish? Setting up my 420 after a recent move didn't have room for my smaller tanks so i had to get rid of them. Is that to big? The fish are P Bass btw either from rapps or snookin haven't decided yet but rapps has them at 4.5in and snookin at 3.5in. They will be the only inhabitants in the tank until they are bigger to add something else or whatever the case may be. So will they be ok to start out in something that big?

I like the idea of a grow out tank when you have fish that need special care (e.g., weaning off live foods, overly shy, skittish from the move or just from being small, needing very high temps or small live food) or may have medical needs that are hard to address in a mammoth tank. I also like the idea that I can see the fish actually eating (which can be challenging if the tank is huge.)

It's certainly a requirement if the fish is too small and can be eaten by other fish or out competed for food. But I think there are some fish you'd still want to give a smaller more controlled dedicated tank to get them used to you, the room, the food and time to put on some weight.

In your case, with P Bass, as long as they will go for the food and adjust quickly, then you should be fine.
