my baby ornate seems to be growing external gills. I thought they had these from the beginin and that they then degraded over time. when i bought it it had little stumps and i thought it was just finishing degrading them, but now they seem bigger. i think hes growing them back. can this happen?

Yup they can regrow-Anne

i have also heard that they can regrow but water conditions need to be top notch. So you're doing something right. :)

As far as im concerned having external gills of an ornate is a sign that it is still in its juvenile stage, and disappears as it matures. do some research i am not so sure:naughty:

i have him in a 6 gal growout and i aint doin **** :P
just a 20% water change ever 3 or 4 days n feeding him as much as possible...

Speaking of ornates and external gills...
i noticed my ornate still has hers and she's already 8 inches long! The right one's been shed off already but the left one still has a small stub.

one of my dels' gills also blossomed like some strange flower. I was kinda worried... thinking maybe my water doesnt have enough O2 or something. I didnt know that it was actually a good sign. :headbang2

i think it isnt a good sign... well its not a bad sign i think it does mean theres not enough O2 in the water. I have my temp up quite high right now to increase metabolism so the water isnt holding too much oxygen, but concidering these fish can breath atmopspheric air, it doesnt matter too much. but i think thats why its grown back its gills...

I've had some in highly oxygenated water and they've still regrown the gills so it's more like they're regrowing battered fins. They'll finally lose the gills when they reach around 7" or so. Some retain it longer than others while some lose it earlier.
