Hello all. I'm look into the smaller species vatf, tatf, or fatf depending on availability. I was wondering if its best to grow them out in groups? Or solo? My plan was a solo atf with some dithers(balas or tinfoils) until the atf has some size on it.

I personally would do solo they don't always do good in groups and if you keep it solo and it's not running into walls it will keep you with a specimen in perfect shape fin and scale wise vs always split Fins from fighting.

Personally, if the tank is less than 280g then I'd go solo with one Bala shark and non-agressive tinfoils barb. Make sure you picked the best one of the pack though, for some LOVE to run into walls and that'll be a problem when it grown up.

I'd say solo...you may end up with one fish at the end. Not always the case but my suggestion.

Agreed with above post and if you do a group as said the only when that'll look good is the dominant fish and if that changes then none will look good. the way to tell who's dominant is who's dorsal is intact. By nature they don't allow the others to look good. Also if you add dithers they'll probably be killed eventually. But you can try. TF barbs are a little more hardy than Bala sharks but balas look better imo. So which one is up to you. Could try SD too.

It all depends upon how knowledgeable u are on atf. If ur a newbie, go with 1 nice tiger. If i was u I'd go with a goliath. If ur tempted for a school, ur gonna need a min of 3 better off with 5 as well as some dithers, like tfb or sd. Better off with tfb. Aggressive feeders and can take a beating np! Make sure u have high o2 and filtration! It's a must. U can power feed with live til they reach 6" then definitely switch it to nonlive. I've had good luck with mp or tilapia chucks as well. If u can get them on pellets, even better. U have to do ur best to cut their aggression down amongst themselves. It's a natural habit but hopefully in a big group u will be able to cut it down. The issue is , is that they aim for each others eyes, and can do damage. Once that happens, u can lose the fish. GL!!!
