I was wondering what everyone thinks. In an ideal situation, (meaning you could afford/already had the final tank) would you use a growout for a young monster fish? Why or whynot?

would depend mainly on is the baby monster going to be potential food for any other monsters in the tank, if yes a grow out tank would be a yes.
if no, i wouldn't bother to be honest financially.
although i probably would grab it anyways just for the extra tank :D

A growout is to grow your fish to keep them from being bullied/eaten in the main tank. If you're doing shoalers or introducing a smaller fish first there's not really a point.

I tend to buy fish small and grow them out vs. buying big fish.

I quarantine in a 20L or 29 for usually 3 months or so...which is much preferable to dumping the fish into a larger community (without quarantine).

I have enough tanks that I can move fish into larger ones as they grow.

True to all above as well as some small fish get spooked by a huge tank and will take to hiding as a natural instinct against predators. Smaller tank equals comfort and security.

if your main display has been setup for a while growouts become a necessity as most if not all of your fish are full size. So if you wanted another and didn't have enough money for the show size a growout would be a necessity. for most of us on here I think that's the case.

now if you're using the term inappropriately to try and get away with keeping a fish in too small a tank I'd have an issue, but if you have or are in the process of building the final home I see no issues with growouts nor do I think I could do without them.

I use a growout tank because I have 2 large fish and I will be aquiring big tanks in january, i want more than 2 large fish so I bought babies and I will want them to have some size before than, and so they will be big enough to not become food.
