I have a pleco who I believe is a common pleco. I purchased him at Petsmart. He is about 3 inches. Currently he is living in a 10g tank. This is only temporary though. As soon as we move, he is getting a much bigger tank. Heis currently offered Hikari Algae wafers and frozen/thawed shelled peas. I just read through the dietary thread and plan on adding a lot more variety to his diet.

How much can I expect him to grow (per month/year?) once he is moved into his larger tank on a varied diet like that discussed in the dietary thread?

Why would you want a common pleco is beyond me lol I used to have one in my 10gallon feedertank (without knowing how big it got Lfs told me they get 2inches this was years back) I got him at 2 inches in a matter of weeks he got to 4inches and then stopped at 6inches And then he died soon after

You kept him in a 10 gal... why don't you try living in a phone booth????:screwy:

That being said... I have one in my 75, had him since about 2" and now he's about 8"... been about 4 years. I feed him sparringly, as he gets snacks from other fishes leftover foods. The more you feed it, the more it will grow.

Years back doesn't mean anything... You just said it got to 6", stopped growing and died. It doesn't get to 6" overnight...

Yes, I know the tank is too small for him. We are limited on space and so we set up a 10g. My husband has been wanting a pleco for years as he used to have a huge one as a kid (his mother had a huge 75+ gallon tank. I can't remember the exact size, but it was huge) Since we are moving into an apartment soon (in the next 1-2 months, hopefully in September) we got him his pleco.

I plan on moving up to a 55g tank when we move and at some point getting a 75g. He was being fed 1/4 of an algae wafer per day (he would not consume a whole wafer) and he also gets the shelled peas. I'm going to the store tonight and picking him up some zuccinni, squash, lettuces, and such to add to his diet.

Thanks for the replies by the way. :D I really do want to get into keeping fish again and while I am quite the dummy, I want to learn.

Because commons are better then many fancy ones. I'd rather own a common over a Zebra... even if they were the SAME price.

Common's are far more active, friendly and get bigger then 2 inches compared to Zebras.

I turned my nose up to Zebras many times back in the 90's when they were only $35... yet had 5-10 commons in my collection.

Same for clowns and many other plecos.

Note: Don't get me wrong... I don't dislike ANY pleco. But there is too many out there.
