i have 2 pieces of malaysian driftwood in my 58 gallon and one piece has some fuzzy hair looking stuff growin on it. its like an inch long and kinda flows with the water lol. i know some wood does this theres no other algae on the glass sand or the plants. my question is tho will it hurt anything, will it go away or how do i get rid of it.

I'm guessing that this wood was dry before you put it in your tank. Is the growth kind of slimy when you touch it? I wouldn't worry too much about it really, your fish will probablly make short work of it.

its hair algae im preety sure. you may have too much light or too much nitrate in your tank but it also may just be nothing i wouldnt worry too much as long as its not so bad that its making your tank look ugly :)

my nitrates never get over 20ppm weekly 25% water changes lighting could be a factor its lightly planted with T5HO lighting it isnt hideous i was just curious about it

i guess its closer to a algae it is hair like and kinda floats with the current and is whitish gray
hmm if its whitish gray it probably is a fungus and not algae again this isnt uncommon on driftwood and it shouldnt hurt anything

I have the same driftwood and the same growth. I have had it for over a year with no adverse effects. I figure that it is something that commonly grows on this driftwood in nature. It only grows on my largest piece. I don't think it is my lighting, as it only grows on the underside and lower portions of the piece. I pluck it off from time to time and it grows back. It has never gotten out of control. I don't have an algae or a nitrate issue as I am a water change fanatic. I hoped that my bushy nose plec would develop a taste for it, oh well.
