Hiya,

My juvenile Spotted Gar has a white growth on the middle of the end of it's snout[very end], that appears to not be ich. I quarantined this little guy out of my 250g community after noticing what seemed to be injuries from a quarrel with one of my silver Aro's. After quarantining him, he developed a white-to-red sore on his underside, which appears to have gone away thanks to an anti-ich medicine I was told to use by my lfs.

Now that that's cleared up, he's got a white spot on the tip of his nose. He's still eating feeders healthily and doesn't appear stressed out at all.

I'd take a picture of this, and have tried, but due to my horrible camera's resolution and the natural colour of the gar, it doesn't show up in any of the photos.

I was told by my lfs that it may be from him swimming against the walls in the quarantine tank[a 55g] too much.

Any advice/help would be appreciated. I've been waiting for this to clear up before re-introducing him to my community.

P.S. Sorry for run-ons. I know they bug some people. :nilly:

don't use "anti-ich" meds on a gar...most LFS have no idea what they are talking about when it comes to treating gars (although they may have good intentions).

sounds like a minor infection due to the gar rubbing on the glass - this can be treated in the main tank or quarantine. just bump the temperature up to 82F and add 1 tbsp of salt per 20g of water. perform a 50% water change every other day (or every day if you have the time) until the condition improves.

do this for at least a week and let us know if the condition improves. if not, we can try some other methods. usually heat and salt and water changes will cure most common gar ailments. good luck--

it could definitely be helped with photos, but the OP explained the photo situation in the post, please read before making completely asinine posts. we have a general treatment proposed that should help the situation regardless of photographs.--

Yeah, I know... whatever the problem is do a 50% water change, add salt and bump up the temp.

Just saying that it's WAY easier to see what's going on with pics. With the current low cost of technology and the fact a 5 year old can post pics online I don't think it's ask TOO much out of someone. Especially if they really care about their fish and want an accurate diagnosis.... Just saying...

"low cost" of technology is a relative concept, so just because you can head out and buy a new camera so you can shoot your fishes doesn't mean everyone else can.

the OP made it clear why there are not photos with this thread...is it that hard to understand? shooting the tip of a gar's snout and getting the right contrast on what is likely a minor infection is difficult...i've tried many times with mediocre success, and i'm not horrendous with a camera either.

my main point of response to your post was that it was pointless...it's funny from time to time, especially when photos can obviously be added, but when it's been explained in the original post, it just makes yours look foolish (and adds unneeded clutter).

pointless posts in direct contrast with the presented information are best suited for other forums--
