growth rate for jags?

I bought 2 back in nov or dec can't really remember and one has pretty much tripled in size and is showing a significant amount of gold colouring where as the other jag has maybe doubled in size and is extremely dark colored. It has me hoping they could be a male/female due to the growth rate difference but I don't know anything about sexing them. They were both about a 1/2" or so when I got them. Here's a pic of the bigger one, the other one is hard to get pics of but it's head is @ the edge of the pic above the firemouth. You can see the difference in darkness a bit in this picture.
