I have had a cichlisoma salvini for about 2 weeks now. Got him/her very small. It was only like 1 inch at the most. What is the expected growth rate for this fish? I am going to eventually put it in my 100 gal with my other SA/CA fish. Also what is the determining factors for male vs female?

they grow slower than most but not to bad my salvini female is close to 2 yr old and about 5in i will post pic to show male from female

first pic is the pair together male in front the second male solo the third is pair female in back the female will have a black spot in the dorsal and more red on the belly

my salvinis grew an inch in about 3 months.

when I had my breeding pair back in the day I found them to be slow growers, especially compared to most other common cichlids like dempseys

Thanks for the info. Guess it will be in a grow out tank for quite some time before it is ready to join my other cichlids. Even at two inches it will most likely become a meal. It will probably need to be closer to 3 to 4 inches before my o's don't think of it as dinner.

I think mine took 3-4 years to grow from 2'' to 5''. It grew a little faster then a firemouth I bought at the same time, which was the same size.

If you want urs to grow quicker u gotta get him into a bigger tank and feed him well.
Mine went from 5.5" when i bought him to 8" in 6 months.
I feed him hikari carnivore pellets and hikari massivore delite pellets, as well as various floating sticks and sometimes chopped fish.

our old salvini got to a massive brutal 8" in about 1.5 years. he grew to about 6" in about 7months

the males dont have pink bellies as the females do. easy to tell apart really
