I am getting mine the big tank he deserves in 2010... He is currently 6inches...

What is a good expected growth rate???

In my experience it varies. I have one a few years who is only 12.5 inches. I also have one that is about 5 months he was about 1.5" when I got him and is now around 9 inches. So I see a lot of variance in this.

food and water conditions are mainly involved in its growth rate.

Out of curiosity, when I asked in plecos(and lfs) I was told he could stay for life, but in general aquaria disscusion I was told he will get too big for my 55..................

Too many factors to answer. What food are you feeding, how often do you do water changes, what nutrient levels to you try to maintain, what medias do you run, and most importantly, what species is the pleco?

its a common

had 2 that got about 14" in 8 years. and BTW they don't grow to the size of the tank... people just say that cause they usually die when they get as wide as the tank. stay in a room wide enough just for you to turn around and see how you like it.
