I just inherited/ rescued one of these guys from a buddy who's getting out of the hobby. I know they get huge, but what's the growth rate like? And how long before an 18" wide tank is too small? He's in a 75 with a few cichlid grow outs, and he's not going into my bigger tanks due to the bioload of another large cat.

You probably shouldn't rescue large fish If you know for sure you're nnot going to house then.for live. I'd say around 9-10" since they are constantly swimming fish they need lots of room

I wouldn't go any bigger than 7" in a 75 gallon tank, they are very skittish and when spooked swim full speed into the sides of the tanks.

Mine took about 9 months to go from 6" to 10"+. They don't grow as fast as some of the other big cats like RTC's but also depends on how often you feed them and water quality.

How big is he currently?

Well it's around 5" now. It was either my spare 75 where I breed koi angels or the toilet. My buddy was taking down his tank and didn't care what happened to the fish. The pangasius was the only thing in the tank I was interested in taking home. He had it in a 55 with some balas, and low quality angels. My lfs will take it when it outgrows my tank, where it will surely not get sold, and most likely die.
