I go to my lfs weekly to see if they get anything different and finally after a yr or so I seen they had one of these. It's only about 3-4 in now , just wondering how long I would have to grow it out b4 I put it in my big tank?

Depends on the species, I got an auchenoglanis wittei giraffe cat in April 2010 when it was 2 1/2" long, it's now 19-20". Research shows that they'll ultimately reach around 30". The more common species-auchenoglanis occidentalis, grow to 3' or so, hope this helps...

Yep. IME and from what I read, the biggest ones in that genus (that grow to about 3') gain roughly a foot a year first year or two. They will slow down noticeably with years.

ID-ing species in that genus is far from easy, BTW.

This is Yellowcat's beauty (hope Yellowcat doesn't mind): http://www.planetcatfish.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=24&t=36906

Oops, mistake- I got the fish in April 2011, not 2010. From 2 1/2 " to 19" in roughly a year and a half...

They grow a little slower than the fast cats like rtc and nigers etc. but not much, about 2" a month until they reach about 20" and then their growth will start to slow. Great cats. One of my fab I've ever kept.

Did you mean to say nigers? or tigers as in TSN?

Great to see they can grow so fast.
