ive had my JD for a about 1 1/2 years and it grew to 6 inches after a year. do they slow down after a year? mine is in an 80 gal tank and has always been top dog and i do weekly WC. do most cichlids slow down after awhile?

Yeah, my JD has not grown in a while. He grew to 7" pretty fast, and is still eating like a pig. But it seems to be slow going after they get to a certain size.

He has been putting on girth, though.

I've seen some 10" JDs, but their keepers do large water changes every other day, and they were kept either alone or in pairs., with no other fish in very large tanks

I had a 12" jd, he was about 7yrs old. Most of the jds i've owned maxed around 10" around 3-4 years old. Most large new world cichlids do most of their growing within the first 2 years. If you are worried something might be slowing it down try treating with epsom salt. Dissolved in water then soak his food in it and let it dry out. The magnesium in the epsom salt will kill most internal parasites, it doesn't hurt the fish since they only absorb a certain amount into their bady and process it back out relatively easily. Word of caution it does kill inverts also (crays and snails)
