Growth rate

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
They grow very, very quickly when taken care of properly.

Your 10 incher has the ability to reach 2 feet within this year.

Expect it to be 1 1/2 feet by June or July.

And this is NOT with feeding it a lot.

i feed mine shrimp and live is this good food for him

shrimp is a good choice for the fish as a staple, but i would also offer up a variety of foods to supplement this.

i have discussed this with oddball (phil) back in the day and vegetable matter is a good source of added vitamins and nutrients that seem to go a long way to preventing lateral line and pore erosion that lungfishes are quite susceptible to. offer up some algae wafers perhaps once a week, and earthworm sticks are a great food for them as well (i feed all my lungfishes this stuff frequently). you can get earthworm sticks from www.kensfish.com. they are pretty cheap by the pound, but they can cloud up the water temporarily.

with this sort of variety your lungfish will be quite healthy and should develop a nice pattern.

i would say, however, not to be worried if your lungfish doesn't reach 24" within the year. i had my annectens for over three years and when i gave it to a friend it was pushing towards 22". it received proper care and did not reach anywhere near 2' in it's first year. your 10" lungfish is most likely a YOY (young of the year) fish, but could also be a year one fish. either way, 18" in length is definitely within reach, perhaps even 20"...growth rates vary with individuals, but in all the lungfishes i have kept and keepers i have spoken to over the years, they rarely had an annectens reach 24" in year one (SAL and AUL are a different story).

keep up with regular large water changes (at least 50% every other week, but more is preferable...definitely more frequent while he is in that 20g while the 125g is cycling). in fact, since you now have the 125g, i would work on cycling that (as you said) and just do frequent water changes on the 20g every other day (about 50%), since cycling the 20g really isn't an issue at this point.

good luck, and let us know if you have further questions--

Yes, Shrimp is great - Live (I presume you mean fish) is okay as an occassional treat -- some lungfish don't care for it anyway)

But as was stated earlier - variety is good for lungfish - Mine gets all kinds of pelletized foods, shrimp, meaty foods... you name it.
