What's the growth rates of ornates... I have 2..both r 3".. I want to know what can i feed them to speed up thier growth rates ? and if there is any thing i should know...

they grow pretty slowly, but it should be 8 inches in 4 or 5 months.

Feed hikari sinking carnivore disks (break them in half first) and hikari sinking carnivore pellets as a staple.

Use meaty foods such as tilapia filet, market shrimp, and beef-heart as a supplement. Also feed krill, chopped earthworms, and black worms.

Make sure you have good water and tons of hiding spots too. If you do all of this, your bichir should be about a foot after a year.

However, growth also depends on your fish, my ornate grew 6" in 4 months and my senegal has only grown about 1" since the time I bought him. (only 6", and I bought him a year ago)

i agree

So they grow really slow... So them max they could reach in the 1st year is 1'... Im gonna see if i can change that..

In my experience, the small ones grow slow, but the larger ones can pack it on. My 12"er hit 14" in less than 6 months

Yea it depends. I have 2 bichirs and both were the same length when I bought them (about 3"). Now one is about 6 and the other is still only 4ish.

Yeah it really depends on the bichir and the diet. If it eats a ton it should grow pretty quickly. The first picture is mine when I had him for about a month. I'd say that he was about 4" then. The second picture is what he looks like now. He is about 9 1/2-9 3/4 inches now. So he grew about 5 1/2- 5 3/4 inches in a year. Mainly on a diet of shrimp and earthworms. He would have grown much faster in my opinion if I had fed him beefheart or carnivore pellets. I plan to change their diets though and they will most likely grow at a much faster rate from that point on.
