Hi all, I would like to know what is the typical growth rate for the Green Terror, and Jack Dempsey from a 2 inch stage in life i.e. from a LFS. What kind of time frame is required to grow them out to 6 inches with proper water changes and regular feeding of pellets and flakes, with the occasional live food.

Thanks guys!

This gets covered around once a month. Gold Saums are slow growers, not sure about Jack Dempseys because I've never been interested in them.

Low Nitrates as a result of regular water changes, a solid but varied protein based diet, as well as an appropriate environment (little to no aggression, territories, space for all Cichlids) and you'll get the best growth rates. I wouldn't bother with live food either to be honest.

I haven't kept either so I can't give you accurate figures on either, but for 6" I'd say you're looking at around a year for your Gold Saum, and perhaps 6-8 months for a Jack Dempsey.

I've had my GT under 2 years and he's about 9".

Varied diet and weekly 50% water changes

GTs grow really really slow, compared to other cichlids. I've had mine for more than 4 months, and he's grown about 2 inches, maybe not even that. I'm not sure about JDs, except its significantly quicker than the GT.

Thanks guys!! Anyone have input on the Dempsey's, please chime in.

My female GT has almost doubled in size in a month and a half. It really depends on what you're keeping them in, temp, feeding schedule, so on. Mine is in a 220g with two meals a day and ~85 deg. water temp.

85 deg water temp? wow and i thought i had it high around 82 or 83. my jack was growning slow but it was only in a 10 gal till he hit like 2.5 inchs then i thought he might be big enough to jump in with some nonagressive guys, i guess just cause they arnt agressive doesnt mean they they arnt predatory. he had half his face ripped off, i nursed him back for about to months then he dropped dead.

i know red terrors are painfully slow growers to, what do u think the growth rate would be for them, i got 3 2inch ones from jeff rapps.

86 degree water, high oxygen, frequent water changes, tons of food, makes for some fast growth, more water changes.

How big was she?

It really depends on the size of the fish. A tiny fish doubling in size in a month isn't really anything special.

86 degree water temp seems a bit high for me. thats what i use to keep my discus at. but none the less i think it all depends on the fish. my gs is growing surprisingly fast. it differs from one person to the next
