ok. i just recently got a gator gar, which will be properly taken care of. but the point of this thread is this...... i told my friend that i got a gator gar. he has housed a florida gar in a 55 for the past 3 yrs from yoy. its only 12". i thought i read somewhere on here that gars wont stunt their growth? is this true? if so is it true in all gars? after hearing this i was a little worried that if i kept my gator in a tank too long, would it stunt its growth and him not grow when hes in the pond. also, his florida is a 55 w 2 oscars and a goldfish? any inputs please!!!!

they will stunt. were is he? If u wouldnt mind, id like to check him out. Or could u at least get pics? he should be much larger..... something greatly is not right. and like i said in PM his tankmates suck!

ull have to up grade in about 9 months in ur current tank. maybe a bit more. reality id be more worried about the cichla he is with than stunting. feed ur well(food constantly for the first 9 months to a year) then slowly cut back. at his size he needs food 24/7. move him to a bigger tank when he needs it dont wait on that.

ps for example my florida gar went from just under 2" when i bought him(he barely could eat feeder guppies, i had to ask for the smallest one that they had, pughs again) to just under 17"

ok cool. i dont have any pics of the other gar i mentioned. just thought it was odd he was so small cuz i heard they didnt stunt

they will unfortunatly. especially if they dont get alot of food early on. think u can try to get some pics?

Whomever says Gar do not stunt does not know gar in captivity at all.

no way...my gator gar is going to grow up to 10 feet long...i'm seriously concerned...my 120g wide tank will likely only house the fish for 1 year at best :)

Your screwed... They grow to 12 foot :) their first year.. everyone knows this.... 120 gallon only is suitable for ten to fifteen minutes.

seriously, at what length should i move my gator out of th 120? i was thinking 12-14"? since its only 18" wide

I think my florida is stunted. I bought him last year at 12 inches and he has grown one inch in 8 months. Eats like a pig and swims in a 300. I dont get it
