I've had two senegals for about a week now, and have been feeding them blood worms about twice a day, but its very expensive because I got the blood worms in the Hikari cubed packaging, and the two bichirs are too small to eat a whole cube, or even half, so I've had to drop some in the bichir tank, and distribute the rest to other tanks. I've just started feeding pellets today (this morning) and was wondering if it would negatively impact their growth (ie: do bloodworms make them grow faster, or do pellets?). I want to switch to pellets as main food (for ease and cost) and bloodworms as treats. Is that a good idea, or should I stick to feeding non pellet food?

pellet food would be a lot better! I just don't think anything can match the nutrition of pelletized foods.

what pellets are you feeding them?

I go with hikari gold sinking 'mini' for small bichirs.

are they able to eat it without much struggle?

you don't want them spending too much energy just on eating, because they need the energy potential of the food for growth and such. :)

I can break the Hikari pellets down some more. They do have some trouble eating it, but I just tried shredding it to really small sizes and they seem to do a lot better!

cool, good to hear! you should be seeing some better growth in the next few months, but remember that the fish genetics and the health of your water play a big role too :)

I don't think they even need bloodworms. You can just keep them on pellets and they would get everything they need.

But variety is also good.

Besides feeding my guys the Hikari sinking carnivore pellets, and some Hikari Marine-a, I also like to feed frozen Beefheart, frozen silverside, raw shrimp and earthworms, ghost shrimps among many things.

It's easy get real inventive too. Especially at the grocerystore. Just be sure and avoid Salmon. Too fatty.

But for tonight my guys are dining on fresh trout we just caught today!! Mmmmmmmm.....:D

Nice nice... I feel like these fishes eat better than we do! But As I overfeed some (still not quite sure how much is just right, don't wanna starve them!), I have to siphon out the extra food, and its like a partial water change ever day!
