My 1.5" albino senegal just died today....it was in my 29 gallon tank with my community fish, but i felt like it wasn't getting nearly enough food because my tiger barbs are insanely pirahna like and grab everything up before it hits the ground, so i put him in a breeder net in my 55 gallon tank, and he just refused to eat mysis shrimp the night before and then about noon i look at him and he's dead...

next time i grow out a small polyp, i'm putting him in a 10 gallon tank by himself :irked:

Sorry to hear that. That's why I've been so hesitant about getting a real small one. Good luck with the next one.

Sorry to hear that... i hate losing any fish..and bichirs are fantastic.. he was a little guy.. maybe just did not get strong because he was such a baby..

ya i'd hesitate to get another one so small. I'm going to shoot for atleast a 3-4" one next time, as then i know for sure he won't have a problem getting food in any of my tanks (unless oscar has anything to say about it)

on the upside today, i get to order a new filter and some snails for my puffer, and i found out since my brother is moving out, i get a bigger room which might mean a bigger tank!

Thats good that you may get a bigger tank ..in fact that is always good.. yes i really never saw one at an LFS that small.. probably would be 50/50 survival.. your better off with 4 inches ..

I've had great success raising little bichirs by keeping them in 10 gallon 'grow out' tanks without other aggressive tankmates. They have much more success finding food in these smaller tanks and are less likely to be out-competed for food.

As for the actual choice of foods, I find that broken up Hikari Sinking Carnivore Pellets supplemented with bloodworms, bits of shrimp or krill, tiny bits of beef heart (occasionally) and a nice, small live earthworm on occasion will encourage growth and keep your little bichirs fat and happy.
