Hi All...

I'm back with a couple questions. I have a 55g tank that has 1 GSP and 1 Zebra Eel. There is a lady near where I live that wants to get rid of her GSP, but right now it is a fresh water fish. My first question is, how long does it and should it take to acclimate a GSP from fresh to salt, and at what age/size? My second question is, are they very territorial? I don't want to accept the gift of a free GSP just to have them fight. Thanks for the replies...

just so i know im not going to say something incredibly stupid....

GSP means...

Green Star Polyp
-or-
Green Spotted Puffer

JK... :D

acclimation from fresh to salt should be over a few weeks.. when the fish is about or a little larger than 2 inches.

they are somewhat territorial and in a 55 if the first puffer's been there for a while i wouldn't risk it.. you could however post an add here in Buy/Sell section and help her find a new home for it..

Depends. Every fish that can go fresh/brackish/salt should be acclimated over a span of a few weeks to make sure that the fish does not go into shock from the salinity changes.
I have migrated guppies from fresh to saltwater within an 1.5 hrs, but they were intended for food. I still have 2 guppies in SW that were not eaten, and yet they thrive in there with no problems.

I didn't know of the other meaning of GSP, but you got the one I was talking about. I will let her know about the acclaimation to salt and the size of when to do it... since they can be territorial I won't accept it... (mine actually went after my arm when I was feeding my eel - just a small pinch, but definatly didn't like my arm in there) but I will tell her of this forum... maybe she can post it.

Mmm guppies - I didn't know they could survive saltwater. We use to use gold fish, but if the porcupine puffer or the snow flake eel (that we had at that time) didn't get them soon enough they would just die. I didn't like that to happen. Its bad enough to make them suffer, but to suffer and not be for a reason... na didn't like it when that happened.

Guppies and mollies are really brackish fish.
Along with other brackish fish that can swing either way... monos, GSP, some catfish as well can all do well and thrive with no problem in SW.
I even had the guppies give birth. But the baby ended up a meal for one of my fish.
It's already preggy again.

When I converted my GSP to marine I just dumped the salt in the sump. It's been almost 2 months and it seems fine gets picked on by damsels though, I don't see the territorial or aggressive side of it.

yeah i wouldnt do what they did. You have to mix the salt for awhile then slowly do it.

i would acclimate it slowly over a month period slowly bringing up the salinity till its your tank's salinity then temp acclimate it and drip it for an hour and your good however it may be lunch for the eel.
