posted this yesterday at pufferfish.net, but doesn't look like there's much action over there, lol. maybe you guys can help me out.

Hi all. I'm new to my GSP, but an otherwise experienced keeper. I have 2 questions about GSPs and snails.

1. Watching it eat snails, am I correct that they are only eating the 'front half' of the snail? That's what it looks like, as if there is still some meat further back in the shell. In that case, I can see why people say water quality is something to watch with these guys.

2. My GSP is currently fresh but working towards brackish. My snails, however, are fresh. Does this matter? Will the snails simply stay in their shells if dumped in higher brackish? Do some species respond better than others? My puff only seems to go after snails when they stick out.

Perhaps both of these problems will resolve as the fish gets bigger if it starts taking whole snails in its mouth and crunching them up, or will that not happen?

thanks

Never keep food housed with their predators. Raise snails elsewhere.
