I just picked up a 55 gallon and will soon pick up a jack or gt. I really want both would they both live happily in a 55 gallon? Would they even get along with each other?

Might work might not work. Depends on the fish. Id personally take a look at full grown Jack Dempseys and see if you really plan to house one in a 55 for life... Ive seen 10" JD's before they are intense fish.

Every fish is different, but I know quite a few people with those two fish together, and they do fine. I have a GT and a JD in my 75 with a couple other fish and they don't even pay attention to each other. They should be fine for 18 months or so in a 55 gallon before needing to upgrade.

I agree that eventually you would need an upgrade...

Maybe its just mine but my JD's are extremely slow growing in comparison to all my other fish.

Either go single wet pet, or overstock..

That's the sure way to go if you don't want to risk anything.

Depends on the individual fishies personalities

yeah most likely I will end up getting one or the other. Also what would be the most appropriate size tank for a gt or jd to live in forever?

I would go ahead and go with both. They generally have pretty similar temperment, just have good filtration and nice hiding places for them. If you see major problems, then throw in a school of dither fish like silver dollars or something along those lines.
