My Jack Dempsey and Green Terror won't come up to the top to eat.

All the GT does is peck through the gravel all day. I drop an almond into the tank and the JD gobbles it up instantly. I'd like to feed these guys the same food though!

I made some fish food using:

1lb shrimp
1lb light bait fish
5 whole oysters (they were expired)
1 can peas
12oz frozen spinach (no ecoli for my fish please)
1 clove of garlic
1 carrot
1 handful of almonds
1 multivitamin

The Jaguar fish gobbles my homemade food right up. The watercow started out being hand fed, but now he rushes to the surface to mow the food as quick as he can. They love the stuff.

The GT and the JD aren't interested. But then again, they won't eat ANYTHING off the surface. The Jag will just eat all of it until she's full and then the rest will just float till i remove it.

Is there some sort of fish MSG that i can add to make it oh so tastey?

As I tell everyone who has problems with their fish not eating, make sure your water is in good shape. Check with at good test kit. Dirty water = no appetite. All of the fish you have are known for being dirty fish. Also, beware of the water cow. I had one that was about 8 inches long and it ate a Texas cichlid that was about 6 inches long. Good luck with your homemade foods.

Wow. I am suprised about the watercow eating the texas. I did not plan on getting a watercow (man what a funny name) but i was at the LFS with my friend and he absolutely insisted, he said it looked like our highschool algebra teacher. ha!

I did not intentionally get the JD onto the almond diet. I had a huge Pacu who used to love eating all sorts of nuts, his favorite being almonds. Occasionally the JD would swim up and snag an almond then swim away as fast as his little fins could take him. Now he's hooked.

I'll admit i haven't checked the water parameters in a while. They used to always check out great straight from the tap, and stay that way in the tank. But who knows, maybe the neighbors have been using lawn fertilizer!

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll check out the water quality.

I think he said his fish will eat but not from the top.

Do you think its because your other fish are so aggressive eating that it intimidates the JD and GT so they wait for the scrapes?

But WTF is a Watercow??

a Oscar??

:nilly: :nilly: :nilly:

It could be that, but when the Jag has eaten its fill it hangs out in the corner. Its very odd.

These fish have weird personalities. The jd is at times very intimidated by the jag and runs away. other times it goes and picks a fit, and the JD always wins. The Jag just wants to breed with the JD.

The water cow is f-in sweet. It's also called a marbled goby (i think.)

It just hides in a cave all day and looks like my high school math teacher. Then when you put food in the tank it comes out, gobbles it up, tells you to do your homework, and goes back to sleep. Probably craps everywhere too. Good thing i have a lot of filtration.

The GT and the JD hang out together. the GT is still quite small and the JD is full grown. I think that the GT is just copying and looking up to the JD like a big brother. I dunno. I'll just stop puting almonds in there until the JD gets hungry enough i guess.

That sounds like an interesting tank. So the GT does eat right?

Oh yeah, and Marbled Goby's are beast when they grow larger. they will eat anything they can fit in their mouths fish wise.

Oh yeah, as far as almonds go, I dont see anything wrong with feeding them that if they will eat it. Fish naturally eat all kinds of nuts and fruits or what ever falls in the water from over hanging branches. Especially CA cichlids, their pretty opportunist feeders.

How big are they and how long have they been in the tank? Sounds like typical juvenile behavior and maybe some aggression from the jag.
