GT and plecos

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have a GT about 8" in a 72 and he is super aggressive to me but leaves all the small clown loaches and my 2 plecos (gold nugget and blue panaque) completely alone. the blue panaque even kinda shares his dug out territory with him. I think it may just depend on your GT more than anything.

I pulled my psueda from the tank today to redecorate and add a second pleco. That is when I noticed a good chunk and some tatters in the dorsal fin. It has to be the silver saum or the tiger barbs. I NEVER see the barbs mess with the pleco though. I have been watching my tank with the lunar lights on to make sure the plecos dont need to be seperated. I have seen the silver saum give both plecos a chase when either one of them went up over some decor:irked:.

I just watched him chase the pleco and try to nip at it again. I have to seperate them. Well, I was expecting to have aggression issues introducing the two psuedas and end up finding out my silver saum is the one I need to worry about. Man, this sucks.

I have seen plenty of GT picking on plecos. I have even had a pleco killed but it was smaller. To be honest though I think it depends on the aggression of the GT AND how persistent the pleco is in going into the GTs area. Some plecos don't seem to get it that they are in a danger zone. Most do though.

I've had to remove a pleco from my GT's tank and all other fish for that matter, he is just a pretty nasty fish and would rather be alone. It all depends on the individual fish. IME my GT is just plain mean to anything in his tank and now he is quit content all by himself

Like surfguy indicated...all depends on the individual fish. My 6" GT was rather "chill" and fine in a 90 gallon with a pleco even when the pleco was out and about.

This is how I ended up with a Plec only tank. I even caught my seemingly 'sweet' female Severum picking at my favorite Royal boy when I tried to put her in there. All I've got in the Plec tank now are 6 small Tetras & 6 Tiger Barbs-and they better not let me catch them picking at the Plecs.
