I have a 30 inch long and 12 inch height tank at my disposal. I want to put some fish in it, but realize that probably wont be big enough. Im also not really sure how many gallons the tank is, so if anyone knows it would be greatly appreciated.

My goal is to put a GT in there, but I dont know how long one would last in it. Thanks for help in advance.

can't guess the gallons unless you give all three dimensions (length, width and height) . . . either way, 30" long is too small to house a GT, probably better suited to cichlids that stay under 5" in TL . . .

That tank will house him for a bit, as long as he is the only fish, it should do for a year if you get him at 2-3". In the end he will need a 4' or more.

I could how a juvie for a little while though right? The ones I would plan on buying would be about 1 inch and 1/2. I believe the width is a little over 1 ft.

what he said apart from the year part.

if you get a GT at 1.5" then in 5 months (maybe a little more/less) it could be about 5-6" with good food and proper tank maintenance. this is when 30" will get very cramped and a new home will be needed. filtration and water changes on such a small volume of water will be key as well.
i got my old GT at about 1.5" maybe a little smaller in sep 06 and by mar 07 he was about 6.5-7" when i gave him away. his growth really slowed at about 6" though.
