Well i wasnt on the lookout for a new tank, but today i found a 55g tank, with a stand for $60!!

I was growing out a green terror in a 10g tank until he got a little bigger, and i was wondering if he could go in there for life?

The dimensions are 48"x19"x13", i think thats the traditional 55g but im not sure. But it was a steal and i had to pick it up.

I might growout an oscar in there with him, till my 67g tank is open for the oscar, would there be any problems there?

And also what substrate, decor and plants/fake would you use, and driftwood?

The GT can be there for life, they only grow about 8 inch, and females a bit smaller I think. The Oscar will grow larger, and since the tank isnt too big, I dont think putting an Oscar is a good Idea. A 55-60 Gal should only be for 1 GT.

ya i got you on that, i was just going to use the tank as a temporary growout but if that wouldnt work then i wont do it. And really no tankmates in a tank with a gt? not even a bottom dweller like a poly of some type, or some loaches?

You can, but if youre thinking long term, its not gonna happen. You can probbaly slip in a bottom dwelling fish, but make sure it has a hiding spot. The problem you might have is the GT harrasing it, but if you provide a territory it can work. Make sure the fish is same size or bigger too.

I wouldnt go with loaches, clown loaches get big, I dont know about others though. And they need to be in schools to be happy/healthy. Maybe a catfish of some kind (Small growing catfish), or possibly a Senegal Bichir, or even a pleco.

I still haven't finished the profiles but I've included the sizes and details of some species.

a 55 will be a good home for a GT male or female but not a pair. the 12" GT's that people talk about are the only the largest GT's and its not a common size, they usually hit 8-10".
that said you should look to upgrade if you happen to have one of those excellent growers. if the fish starts looking tight in there then its time to upgrade.
tankmates can include clown loaches, plecs, larger barbs such as filaments. all will work well even in a 55.
no more than 6 barbs though and 4-6 clown loaches and a BN plec as it stays small and works hard. pictus will also work well. no corys.
introduce the other fish then make sure the GT is small and last to be introduced for the highest chances at keeping the tankmates.

alright ya the gt that i got is still pretty small and i found this tank at like a good will store, right next to my lfs. It was crazy cause i was just talking to my mom about getting a 75g, but she said that i would have to wait till i got all the money for it. then i saw this and for a metal stand and the tank was only $60, so i thought it was quite a steal. im going out to get a filter and a heater for the tank today so i can start cycling it.
