I have a lot of experience with JDs and I know that they tear up plants. I don't have any experience with GTs and just got my first one about a week ago and I was wondering if the situiation is the same?

i have only kept plants with a GT once and they did fine. however, they were very hardy plants. anubias family, they attach to rocks and wood after you leave them tied on to the wood/rock for 6-12 months. he left them alone completely.

Thanks, I will give that a try. I also have a Black Convict and a firemouth with my GT. Will either of those 2 mess with the plants?

couldnt tell you really, had both but never with plants. i did notice my FM going through the gravel a lot, like an eartheater. the cons were also quite the little minors.

I have kept them in planted tanks with no real trouble. They brok up a littel water sprite but nothing major, I had Crypts, Vals, Ludwigia all were fine.

I never had live plants with my GT's (just fake stuff).
I was forever finding the plants floating around the tank. I used sand as substrate.
Also when they were getting ready to spawn my female became quite the earth mover.

I have kept all three with plants, it can be done, just have to focus on tough or indeible plants . . . some ideas that worked for me are:

a) anubias, java ferns (tie them to driftwood or rocks)
b) amazon swords (large ones, maybe put rocks around the base)
c) cryptocorynes (mainly get left alone)
d) onion plants (tough, inedible, typically left alone)

most of these plants are worth a try . . .

So I got some amazon swords and put them in my 75. I have to say so far so good. Nobody is trying to uproot them, in fact my FM and convict don't even seem to know they are there at all. My GT seems to enjoy them, he hangs around them and swims through them and so far has not tried to eat them or rip them out. :D

Thanks for the advise everyone!

Wish you luck. Would love to have plants with my cichlids, but every time I've tried it I've been unsuccessful.

Yeah this is the first time I have been successful with plants. My jack just tears plants to pieces.
