I don’t know
Wondering if anyone has an inclusive list of fish that are considered Guapotes, I know grammodes, parachromis species and nandopsis + salvini
But what others are there?
Which are suitable- as pair or wetpet in a footprint of 48x18?
If you are adding a species to the thread please share a photo of avail and what you have experienced in terms of care needs.

This is an interesting question, I don’t know if there is an “all inclusive” list because honesty as far as I know the term Guapote comes from a local name for a managuense then later was expanded and built upon into a collective group. Which I only included Parachromis in before I started actually learning and researching further.

Here is an article by Paul Loiselle it’s abit old but a good read. I’m also interested in what everyone includes in this list.

Thanks for sharing- it’s one of those pages I’ve visited and read a few times.

In fact pretty much any fish related question I google the first two pages I’ve recently visited.

I’ve seen it referenced and much as vieja for a catch all among the locals.

Fascinating group of fish, tetracanthus and freddy’s May be my favorites.

As some one that goes to Costa Rica fairly regularly, it’s funny to me that I never thought to go inland and fish freshwater. I’m always fishing the salt water when I’m there and haven’t really given two thoughts to the cichlids that live there.

The past two-three years I’ve really gotten Into my fish keeping, although I’ve kept oscars and various cichlids since I was 14, however I never really bothered to do any actual research into where they come from and all the various types.

Well needless to say next year when I return to Los Suenos I will definitely be tracking out to try to catch a monster Dovii

Maybe a red one!

Same boat, been keeping fish since I was 16. At 32-33 it became a passion maybe an obsession

Lake Arenal is one of the best places to fish for dovii (they are often called the rainbow bass there).
Average water temp in the lake is low 70s, but some of the best fishing times are in Nov & Dec when the water temp drops into the 60s, and when winds are strongest.
Here is Panama, it is alsoccoler and a good time to fish for peacock bass in Lake Gatun where they were introduced by mistake, and have become some of the most common species.

From what I can see it’s about a 3 hour drive from Los Suenos to Lake Arenal, but I will try for sure! I’ve been through Panama via the canal but aside from one fishing trip to Tropic star (some of the best in my life) I haven’t spent much time there.

Duane’s if you ever curate an aquarium or lead a fish collecting trip, I feel everyone who witnessed it would effectively have a masters in cichlids by the time you finished speaking- is there anything you don’t have first hand experience with?
