Did you figure it out yet? . . . I had one that did this, by different brand name. I unplugged it for 10 min. When I plugged it in again it was fine. Not sure what the problem was though. I buy new thermometers once a year too, just for the heck of it.
 
i just unplugged it about 10 minutes ago and gona see if it helps (prays) spent enough on this hobby as it is lol, thanks for the reply
 
Then the heater has malfunctioned or you set it at the incorrect temp.

If this has worked all winter and has kept your tank at good temp then it has malfunctioned and should be tossed.

Get a quality heater with a thermostat such as rena, eheim or fluval.
 
73 to 86, after unplugging unit. I would get a 5 gallon bucket of water set the heater in the bucket and plug it back in and see if that water go into the mid 80's if so then you have a bad unit.
