Anyone have any idea as to where I can find more info about what fish are native to Guatemala?? I know that Dempseys and fire mouths are. I'd like to know what I can expect to find when I go there in August. We will be in lower/southern Guatemala. Also, does anyone know anything about how to get what we catch back to the States? thanks!

Oh yeah- we'll also be around a large lake for the most part, but might have a chance to go to a river or two.

Getting them back to the states may be hard but i am not sure your best bet would probably be shipping them to a friend waiting at home for them. I am not sure if that requires any kind of license though.

jd's firemouths, trimacs are native and jags were introduced

for a complete listing go to mongabay(dot)com / fish/ data/ Guatemala( Dot) htm

google "the cichlid room" and look under habitats i think it is or biotopes its a good site

You are going to have a hard time bringing them back though..

You might want to do some research about the area you are going to, and see if there is ANY type of exporter working in the fish trade.. he would be the only one with valid paperwork to get the fish out of the country for you.. and it will cost..

You will need a license from USFWS if you want to bring back more than 6 specimens. The cost is $100. There are many cichlids native to Guatamala.

Here is a list.

Make sure to have the shipping and papers straight before you dip a net in water.
Continental screwed me when I was in Peru and I couldn't bring my fish back with me. They said I could bring fish, but when I arrived for my flight, they said only dogs and cats on that plane and I would have to send my fish cargo. I didn't have time. I was lucky to have some place to leave them until I go back later this year.
