I have seen a big increase in the number of available types of this fish, so I finally took the plunge. Growing out in a 30 G.

Hint, the flash I had to use last night washed out the blue...:)

Nice lil EBJD!
You have a UV sterilizer hooked up?
I never had much luck with getting small(1.5"-1.75") even with the light & thorough WC's.
I've had much better luck getting them @ 3.5" -4".
How big is he/she?
Congrats!

No UV, but I have 3 HOBs on this 30g. I did not know they were extra fragile. Thanks for the heads up!

It's maybe 1.25"? Biggest of the 6 they had, without a clenched dorsal
(the big one did and was sitting in the corner).

Extra fragile alright... Came home to a dead EBJD. :(

One day to die in a tank that has nothing in it and it is cycled, I think the long drive home stressed it.

I just got through some major fish room renovations, so I might wait to buy another little one again, due to the swapping of filters and fish I can't have fragile fish in mini cycling tanks.

They're very prone to internal parasites.
I even got them from a reputable source, overkill on filtration,UV,live plants, etc.
Daily 20% WC's would stress my lil ones out too.
I guess some are stronger then the others, it's so hard when you just choose by the color of the fish too.
Was told to get a group to have a better chance since the stronger one would pull through.
Nada...
Good luck with your survivors.

If you decide to add another EBJD getting 1(or2)over the size of 4", is usually considered "past the danger zone".

To think I bought 4 over getting a Thai Silk Flowerhorn.
I'm positive the Thai Silk would still be around if I decided to get that fish, & I got the UV because of the EBJD's.
It's all good I use the UV on my main tank & it's crystal clear.

That's the price/risk we pay to have pretty fish, & IMO is all part of the hobby.
You save some & you loose some.

keep him in his own grow out tank till he is about 3 to 3.5 inches. I had one, thats what I did. I over did the bio filter. Had him in a tn gallon with a bio filter for a 20 gallon tank. he is know in the big tank with a green and red severum, blue acara, and blood parrot.

That what I did, I only had EBJD in the tank.

I might get a normal JD, or a texas instead, if these guys are fragile I am not that responsible enough to own one right now. I just moved a bunch of tanks and had one of my larger silver dollars die too(3.5" or better), some type of injury while in temp holding I hope, there was some clear fungus looking growth around a small spot below the dorsal-found it upside down under some driftwood.

The other 4 seem to be fine, but time will tell. All media was left alone-no change except for the substrate.
