I have a pair of Guianacara owroewefi and the male is nipping the females fins terribly, my question is do I need to separate him until she heals?

They seem to do best in a harem situation, 1 male and as many females as you can get.
I have 5 in a 150 gal, and 5 in a 100 gal. In each tank, its 1 male and 4 females, and at least so far, aggression is minimal.

nice pic, my male has almost same markings as yours. I guess I will have to separate them cause he is not letting up and her fins are shredded. When I purchased the pair from Rapps I assumed that they would be getting along and have some babies. And they were for about 2 months now. Do you think he will eventually kill her if I don't separate?

I find with many Geophagines a situation with only a male and 1 female, the female will be killed.
Gymnogeophagus are very much the same, I always try to keep at least 3 or 4 females to 1 male.
Doesn't matter if other species are present, a male will hunt down a female, if she's the only one.

I have G. sp "Rio caroni", my mix is 2m3f (I think). The fish scuffle with each other a lot, but no damage ever occurs. You for sure need more than a pair. I'm actually growing out 7 of my groups fry to add back into the group to see how they act in a larger group. Guianacara are my absolute favorite genus.

You can try separating and reintroducing until they breed. Then you can grow out a group.I wish I had owroewefi, they have beautiful yellow when spawning.

Thanks for your reply Iam going to separate female into a 25 gal so that she can heal up and will re introduce male into that tank and hopefully get them to breed and then later re introduce them back into my 125, I have never bred before and any suggestions will be greatly appreciated, thanks

I'd pick up at least 2 or 3 females before I'd reunite them in the 125.
Mine have spawned at least once, but the extra female choices available helped focus the male on protecting the female and small territory, as opposed to beating on her.
They like cave like structures to spawn in, mine seem to like pieces of PVC.

There are eggs on the wood in the pic above, they are dark green, don't really show.
