Guianacara are fairly versatile ime. Not too aggressive for milder geos as long as you you have sufficient tank space and feisty enough to hold their own with larger fish (including severums, reasonable acara, and others). IME they like overhangs, branches, caves, etc. if you have them in the tank, but will also do ok in a more open tank.

I got 2 of them in with some blood parrots a pair of SB texas and a red bay snook, they get on fine together. the guinacara can easily hold their own but I have found them to be very slow growers

For me their growth wasn't what I'd consider slow, mine reached adult size (males over 5 inches, dominant male six) in less than two years. Got them at one inch, so pretty typical for small/medium growing cichlids ime. Approximately 3-4 inches in a year (depending on gender) and put on another inch or two the second year (depending on gender). Hard to say sometimes why some fish grow differently for one person than another, but in my case I'm not at all obsessed with growth, so I feed moderately, etc. Just my experience.
