the ones i find in fish shops are much lighter color i thought the yellow color ones where a certain type.
 
I think certain spp are more likely to develop certain colours but age, water quality, mood can affect this. The centre line and markings on the dorsal fin from my understanding are the best way to tell.
 
I had a group- now just a Solo male.
I believe to be the same species Dan listed as there are Many ppl near me breeding these.

My point is the males color was better when I had a group of females
 
That graph is useless in identifying those fish, they change their patterns constantly.....maybe you can eliminate 1 or 2...
 
Less so now that we have a few new described and undescribed species. I found it worked well in the past, but required a lot of patience because, as you mentioned, they all express the middle bar at times (breeding, stress) so knowing when to look for the midlateral spot was the hardest part.
