Hey all

Are there any family members that closely resemble the infamous gulper cat(Asterophysus batrachuss)?

I have had a fish sold to me as a gulper but I do not think it really is one. It was ridiculously cheap (£30/$60)....which made me wary...... plus it has a black belly, where all the pics of gulpers i have seen have white belly's...

I will try and get a pic, although he is very camera shy!

Here's a link to pictures of Auchenipteridae family. If its not a gulper, probably a Trachycorystes trachycorystes. :)

Thank you for the link.... I got all excited when i saw the pic of the Trachycorystes trachycorystes, but on closer inspection my fish is completely different.

On mine, the pelvic and anal fins are joined and run along the body joining with the caudal fin, which is tiny. The dorsal is also a lot smaller. Fin arrangement is like a wels catfish....

Very similar head arrangement, but without the plate, which lead me to believe it was of the same family. I went through all those pics of fish in the same family - but i could not find one that matches up. Im thinking hybrid maybe.....?? Unlikely in catfish though?

I will take a picture dring my next tank breakdown....

Maybe a Wallago leeri then?

But pic would be best for better id.:)

OH MY GOD!!! I just found a picture of a W. Leeri....and it is bar far the closest resemblance.... And the website said they grow to 6ft........

:eek::eek::eek::eek:

.......More shock horror........

I think it could actually be a Wallago Attu. These reach 8ft, and in Thailand have been reported to eat small children.....

Could be a Wallago micropogon..... these only get to 5ft. Although my tank is only 5ft long, so that is still a problem.

coloration? could be 'vampire cat' i came across some recently.. do a search for them... here i cant rember the sp. but very close to wallago....
