Hey guys….
So created this account to get some help. I’ve searched several threads and it seems my guy I acquired last Friday is most likely not going to make it?. He was very lazy at the store every time I saw him,but looked in great condition overall. Got him home and put him in my 20long. I have a stone cave that he took to that evening. Here’s where I ****ed up. I put some decor around the heat so he wouldn’t go near it and get burnt, the HOB intake was also in that corner,so just about completely blocked off. And since it was on the other side,I figured he has no reason to even go over there either. Find him wedged in THAT corner next morning.had a burn on his head and back area. Obviously I feel terrible and responsible if he dies. I moved the heater completely sideways at the very top of the tank(like it should have been. Since he has been in his cave with hardy any movement, except to re adjust. I’ve been doing daily water changes with prime and stress coat(think that’s fine for cats?) added almd leaves for what it’s worth(trying to get the blackwater environment). I see slight improvement in the wound but I feel like it’s gotten larger almost. I’ve seen many posts about the open sores,so now I’m wondering if it’s even a burn. Hasn’t eaten(LFS guy told me it could be a week). Parameters are 0-0-0 and ph is around 6.6/8. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I’m super bummed. This will be the second very expensive fish I’ve lost out of the 6 I currently have.
seeing if anyone responds first, can add pics after work.

thanks guys/gals!

Sorry to hear.
Welcome to the forum - wish it was under better circumstances.
Pics would help immensely in diagnosing the problem and coming up with a quick solution.
How long has the tank been set up?
Gulpers can go quite a while without food, so priority number one should be treating the wound and ensuring it doesn’t get infected.

I know right.I hope he pulls through…just wanted to make sure the post got some activity first.I was just about out the door for work. I will post pics when I get home this evening. I did put a small small amount of metroplex just incase. I hope that doesn’t do more harm than good. Another stroke of bad luck, the heater broke that was in his tank. I’ll have a new one tonight. Temps have been 76-79ish. Everything else is prefect as far as water quality goes.

Maybe try to find a new heater with a built in guard... The ones I bought from Hygger have them
Here are the wounds…my concearn is they look almost worse than before. Appears to be healing slightly,though..I know these fish have sensitive skin,so it makes sense they look awful.. I’ve learned my lesson and I feel so bad☹️ Poor bugger. So aside from water changes daily, stress coat and attempting to feed, what would everyone suggest. Feel like I could do more to help him recover. I have metroplex, stress coat, melafix, salt. I’m just weary because he’s a sensitive catfish.
Thank you guys!

Thank you…. Any tips on getting him to eat? Store said they fed silversides, which I have. It’s been 4 days,so I figure I shouldn’t worry quite yet.

When I read about a tank that supposedly has zero readings for ammonia/nitrite/nitrate, I always hear alarm bells. Unless you have literally just filled up the tank and have no fish, those three simultaneous zeros are pretty much impossible. A cycled tank with fish living in it will always show some nitrates, unless you have just completed a 100% water change. An uncycled tank with fish will show ammonia.

I wouldn't offer food at all, unless I were 100% certain that my tank was properly cycled...and with readings you have I'm not certain yours is. Your fish is already stressed by injuries and definitely does not need to deal with ammonia as well.

Keep up the massive water changes, and minimize stress; low light, plenty of cover, etc. I can't comment on meds, except to say that the "blind man with a shotgun" approach can cause as many problems as it cures.
