Metabolism. They eat a lot but rarely.

They don't grow large. Most fish, that live at least a decade and don't grow large, have a slow growth rate. That of gulpers is not too slow though. This is true of not only fish but for instance mammals.

And in general, the amount of feed consumed does not always correlate with growth but rather metabolism. Many of them little-at-adulthood predators like weasels, ferrets, foxes, badgers, otters eat a LOT because they burn through calories.

I am sure you have met people in your life that eat like a pig but remain looking like a twig. I have. And then there are those of us who swear that the muffin they just had eaten has gone straight into their thighs :)
