gulping at the surface

my redtail/shovelnose cat has been going up and putting his mouth above the water line, gulping air and then expelling it out of his gill flaps. none of my other fish do this. why?

do you have enough surface agitation?

could not be getting rnough oxygen through your water

Do you have an air stone? What's your temp? Higher temp means lower oxygen levels

no airstone. the fish are in a 55 (220 currently cycling) with a hob filter, and a canister filter. tank at room temp, not sure exact temperature

That's not true at all. As long as there is surface agitation that serves the same purpose as an air stone. Op, have you tested the water?

moved fish into a new tank, much bigger. 220g. that was 2 weeks ago. behavior is still occuring. water paremeters are ok
