hello!

i have 5 guppies in a 50 litres tank. Now four as two females have died in the last two week. Symptoms with their tale fin wearing away very slowly! im not sure as the females were born in Singapore and the males in england. Perhaps their not as tough? or PH levels in the water (which i haven't checked as of yet)?
anyone might know why this is happening?

How often do you change the water? What are your parameters? WHen did you get the fish? How, and in what order were they introduced?

the tank is 50 litres. i bought the fish at the beginning of february. all three females had babies (three of which are alive and kicking). i last changed the water by 10% about two weeks ago.

introduced? i put the two bags in the water for about 15 minutes, slowly letting water into the bag and after half an hour let them all into the water.

Depending on what the waste factor was in your tank (i.e. ammonia, nitrites, nitrates) and the difference in the chemistry (pH, TDS, gH, kH) The stress from adding them into a different habitat could have lowered the immune systems (and giving birth doesn't help either in the stress factor), they could have gotten some sort of infection that led to (what sounds like) fin rot. Just so you know, fin rot is often just a symptom of another problem... so keep an eye on your fish.

Even if none of the ones who haven't kicked are showing signs of disease. Go ahead and raise the temp to about 80*F (don't worry, guppies can live from 55*F to 100*F so 80 will be alright). Add some salt (for medicinal purposes... like 1tsp per 1-2g of water).

cool, I added a pinch of salt to the water. Is that for PH levels? so high since i've had my tank its been maintained at 80F anyways. Perhaps raise it by 2 degrees more? Yeah the females are from Singapore, so i guess they've been through alot of changes, stresses to their body etc. If the males start to show any problems i might raise the alarms. I've heard of new tank syndrome. however How many times a month do you recommend i change the tank water and by how much? Sorry to blast questions, the guppies were just to pick up microbes in the tank so i can get bigger fish

But thanks very much for your help :)

x

The salt is actually used to raise TDS and help them with osmoregulation (control of water flow in their body).

also i just noticed that the plants in the tank are slowly wearing away too.. like their going see through while keeping their shape. i suppose thats the ammonia? cool so changed about 20% of the water and added a pinch of salt.
