So I brought home my new Gar yesterday and with him 8 feeder guppies and a ghost shrimp my lfs threw in. I properly put them in the temporary 90 gallon tank with my bellycrawler. He was doing great and wasn't interested in the guppies... I woke up this morning and all 8 guppies were gone and the shrimp! Was this just my gar doing this? do I feed him this much daily. should he always have access to guppies in the tank with him?

He should always have access to guppies or at least not go more then a day or 2 w/out access.. and I'm betting your bellycrawler ate everything tbh. I know my dwarf pike (a proteus) will devour any live foods that hit her tank ( and also beat up anything I put in the tank with her). I would suggest also reading the sticky about gar.. mainly in reguards to tank size. at 4-5" a 90 gallon is a dangerous tank... yes it's to big atm. Gar will rocket across a larger tank and break their backs, particularly young skittish fish. I would reccomend moving him to a 20L or similar footprint until he grows abit 8"+. Then the 90 will make a nice home for him for the next year or 2.
